158. Having Complications
Heidi was left alone, standing with Steve on the empty street. “I’m not heading home directly.”
“Wherever you plan to go, I’ll take you.”
His inviting smile awoken the guilt in her heart, chasing away every spirit of objection she had in her. Heidi found herself entering his car and giving him the address of Hope Hospital.
“Do you feel unwell? What’s bothering you?” His eyes reflected worry as the car came to a stop in front of the hospital.
Heidi bit the insides of her cheeks, avoiding his gaze. “Yeah, a bit unwell.”
Somehow, she didn’t like the idea of breaking the news to Steve without knowing why.
As if sensing her hesitation, Steve didn’t question further.
Heidi told him to wait for her, but he insisted on following her inside the hospital.
They met Dr. Shawn in the hallway as he’d just come out of one of the wards.
Seeing Heidi, Dr. Shawn looked so relieved. “I almost lost hope that you weren’t going to come back.”
“Did anything happen?”
Dr. Shawn looked at Steve, his eyes doubtful. “Is he your husband?”
Heidi felt embarrassed. “Dr. Shawn, can we please discuss in your office?”
Then she told Steve to wait for her. Steve obeyed without any qualms, urging her to go ahead.
Inside The Doctor’s Office…
Dr. Shawn waited until Heidi settled down. His face looked troubled and he stared at her with worry-filled eyes.
“After you left that day, someone did come to look for you, Heidi. That person is none other than Lucas Harrison. You won’t believe how scared and anxious I was, lying to him that you didn’t come?”
Lucas Harrison came for her?
Heidi wasn’t surprised. She had suspected that would happen which was why she’d warned the Doctor beforehand to not let anyone know that she’d been to the hospital.
“Lucas Harrison is a feared figure in Phoenix City. Did you perhaps offend him? Of all people, I never expected that the person you were hiding from was someone like him. I thought you were running from thugs who probably caused you those injuries.”
“I didn’t offend Lucas Harrison, Dr. Shawn. Can we please speak about what brought me here?”
Heidi didn’t want to speak about Lucas, fearing to be reminded of his hypocrisy.
In one moment, he would be running to Tracy, ignoring every moral principle to please her, and then in the next moment, he would come to her, acting like the hero in a fantasy movie.
What did he take her for?
A fool?
“Very well. We do our best to protect the privacy of our patients…” Dr. Shawn pulled out a folder from his desk. “I have compiled your medical report. Here, it shows the health state of each one of your vital organs. And here is the result of the ultrasound. This is your first pregnancy, I guess.”
“You are right, Doc.” Heidi caressed the spot on her lower abdomen, her heart melting, her soft gaze lingering in the ultrasound report.
Seeing the tiny figure of her baby which was still developing, her eyes moistened with happy tears.
“Your baby is developing well. It is a miracle that it survived that attack.”
In order for the Doctor to conduct a proper diagnosis, Heidi had told him about the assault she went through the last time she was here.
“However, Heidi…” Dr. Shawn wasn’t done speaking yet. I’m afraid your pregnancy might have complications. You must be very careful, especially during the first trimester.”
“There’s a massive decrease in your glucose level that indicates you’ve been overworking yourself. Your blood pressure is pretty high, a sign that you’re going through a lot of stress. If care is not taken…”
Dr. Shawn paused, studying her expression as if contemplating if he should speak further.
“If care is not taken, Heidi, it can lead to Preeclampsia.”
