138. The Baby’s Daddy
Lucas drove to the Carlsons’ Household. Tracy’s parents were waiting outside the door to the living room, their eager gazes fixed on the gates.
The joy in their eyes shone like a thousand stars as Lucas’s car pulled over.
They welcomed him warmly.
“Son-in-law, you are finally here.”
“We know you are a busy person, however, the conversation we’ll have is very important. We apologize for interrupting your work.”
They led him into the house, ordered the servants to bring drinks and snacks, inviting him to sit on the big couch.
Tracy sat beside him, her demeanor gentle, extending her fragile hands to pour him a glass of drink. “Honey, I didn’t expect you would come.”
After bombarding him with text messages, she acted as if only one call from her had Lucas racing there.
“Don’t.”
Lucas stopped her from pouring juice. He wasn’t interested in drinking it anyway.
Tracy blushed, retracting her hands.
The parents watched with huge satisfied smiles, relating it to loving gestures between the couple.
Seeing Lucas Harrison doting on their daughter, the father was beyond pleased. “If I didn’t see you treating my daughter like an egg, I would still believe the rumors about your engagement scandal.”
“Tracy’s father and I hadn’t been around to witness the engagement, because it was suddenly announced and we were in another country for business. What we heard from people’s mouths was horrible,” her mother added.
“Haven’t I told you guys, Mum, Dad…” Tracy said coquettishly, acting offended that her parents brought that matter up. “The rumors weren’t true, Lucas’s Grandpa was suddenly ill and the engagement needed to be called off.”
But Lucas knew that her words were the exact opposite of what happened. The rumors her parents heard were, in fact, the true story.
He gave Tracy a look, an indication that he was displeased by her lie, and Tracy tucked a strand behind her ear, mortified.
She leaned closer and whispered to him.
Her reasoning was, the true story would cause her parents’ wrath, when in the actual sense, she just didn’t want to lose face.
“Why did you want to see me?” Lucas turned to the parents.
“To celebrate the good fortune, of course!” Tracy’s mother beamed. ” Tracy’s pregnancy is a miracle and we must throw a party by inviting every well-wisher. What do you think? Your presence is very important, Son-in- law.”
“No parties.” Lucas stood up, making the parents’ smile vanish.
“No, Honey. I don’t think Mum means it that way,” Tracy held him back. “It has been years since you sat down with my parents, won’t you stay for a while?”
She skillfully coaxed him to sit down.
“Actually, the main reason why we summoned you here is to speak about your wedding with Tracy,” said Tracy’s father, his once big smile transforming into a serious look.
“You recently got divorced, and now my daughter is pregnant. People will definitely say harsh things, labeling her with hideous names. To shut them up, this is the best time for you to tie the knot.”
Tracy’s father’s reasoning made sense when one looked at it with the perspective that Tracy was innocent while Lucas Harrison was the one who dragged her into his chaotic relationship life because of his immense love for her.
Now Lucas must take the responsibility.
Lucas Harrison only had one response, “I don’t plan to marry Tracy.”
The words were like a strike of lightning to both parents, their eyes wide with disbelief.
Even Tracy didn’t expect him to voice out the words he’d told her before in the presence of her parents.
“Why, Son-in-law? You just told us you don’t want to marry her, right?”
“Tracy’s pregnancy was a mistake,” Lucas replied.
“How am I going to survive alone with our baby if you don’t marry me, Honey?” Tracy tugged at his sleeve, letting her tears fall. “You do know that you’re the baby’s Daddy, right?”
