111. Requesting A Meditation Certificate
“Heidi, you’re here,” Lucas whispered, sitting next to her. Heidi looked away, ignoring his gentleness. “I came early because I didn’t want to keep the lawyer waiting.”
Her indifferent reply dampened his hope. When he saw her in his office, Lucas almost forgot about the impending doom: finalizing the divorce.
“Mr. Harrison, Mrs. Harrison, if you need anything please let me know,” Amanda excused herself.
After the secretary left, Lucas shifted close to Heidi and she shifted away.
Lucas sighed. “Why don’t you want to come back to me, Heidi?”
Heidi gave him a scornful look. “I hate repeating the same thing over and over again.”
“You’re not giving me a clear answer.”
“Is disliking you enough reason?”
Lucas was hurt by her words, especially when she said she disliked him.
He stared at her side profile, her lips were pursed and her eyes were cold.
Lucas murmured, “What if the lawyer never comes?”
“She isn’t the only lawyer on the earth, is she?” Heidi rolled her eyes. “We’ll still finalize the divorce, Mr. Harrison.”
“Can you stop giving me the cold shoulder?”
“No!”
Lucas reached out to touch her when Amanda walked in and announced, ” The lawyer is here.”
Lucas’s expression fell. He hesitated before saying, “Let her come in.”
Amanda left and returned with a woman who seemed to be in her forties.
The lawyer introduced herself as Bella Coleman. After exchanging pleasantries, she sat down on the couch opposite Heidi and Lucas.
“Mr. Harrison, here are the final documents and the initial documents of the divorce submitted to the court.” She brought a few documents out of her bag and placed them on the center table. “The initial documents have your signatures already. Once you sign the final documents, then your divorce will be completed.”
“Can we sign them now?”
“Can we postpone it?”
Heidi and Lucas asked at the same time. The lawyer looked from one couple to another, a doubtful look in her eyes and a subtle smile on her lips.
“Mrs. Harrison, no doubt, you can sign the documents now,” she replied, studying their reaction. “It is not advisable to postpone the divorce, Mr. Harrison. Once it exceeds three months, according to Phoenix City’s law, it will be considered invalid and we will have to start the process over again.”
After saying that, the lawyer flipped through some of the documents in front of her. “Of course, we can’t be in a rush, Mrs. Harrison. Let’s make sure all the documents are intact.”
Heidi tapped her feet on the floor. Strangely, her heart was racing. It was the same for Lucas who couldn’t control his rapid heartbeat.
The lawyer paused all of a sudden, a huge frown forming on her face.
“What’s wrong?” Lucas asked, frowning as well even though his voice sounded hopeful.
“Erm, there’s a huge problem.” The lawyer dropped the documents, scratching her head. “Mr. Harrison, didn’t you submit the financial disclosure documents that concern your assets and properties division?”
Knowing that he’d submitted those documents, Lucas found the lawyer’s action strange.
The lawyer retained a blank look, saying, “In that case, I’m afraid we cannot proceed, Mr. Harrison. Until all the documents are complete.”
“Mrs. Coleman, Don’t worry about that. I don’t want any compensation anyway,” Heidi said.
“Mrs. Harrison, I understand.” The lawyer smiled at her. “However, to prevent any inconveniences in the future, those documents have to be present.”
By inconvenience, the lawyer meant that Heidi might decide to change her mind about the assets in the future.
“If you are doubtful, how about I get a lawyer too-”
“Thank you, Mrs. Coleman, I will look for those documents.” Lucas didn’t let Heidi finish speaking.
He stood up and shook hands with the lawyer.
“Well since that is the case, until we meet again. Please have a nice day.” The lawyer bid them goodbye and left.
After the door closed, the air inside the office became suffocating for Heidi. Her eyelids were cast down and she looked troubled.
“Heidi…” Lucas shifted close, dropping his palm on her lap. “Are you still mad at me?”
“What do you think?” Heidi stood up. ” Whatever you’re up to, Lucas Harrison, you’d better quit it.”
The lawyer’s behavior was just too strange. There must be something fishy going on.
“Let’s cancel the divorce.” Lucas also stood up. “How about we request a mediation certificate instead? Then we can settle our differences, Heidi.”
