148. Escaped
Last night, Lucas dropped her off in this neighborhood. How could Heidi go to a different hospital at that time when she looked very weak?
Lucas turned around and left, his already worse mood dampening.
Replacing the anxiousness in his mind was the frustration that she probably didn’t come to a hospital.
He entered the car, the suppressing atmosphere surrounding him suffocating the Driver.
The driver shuddered from the front seat. “M-Mr. Harrison, should we proceed to the company?”
“No. The Police Department.”
At Lucas’s instruction, the Driver said no other words.
Several minutes later, the car pulled over in front of Phoenix City’s Police Department.
Lucas came out, his once brooding expression darkening, the rage from last night returning multifold.
At the thought that he was going to see that maniac who tried to assault Heidi any moment from now, his eyes burned with fury, his heart thirsty for vengeance.
“Mr. Harrison, you have come.”
“It is so early. We thought you would wait until the afternoon or evening.”
The policemen were acting strange, their lips pulling into nervous smiles.
It was still morning, but the hot sun had started peeping through the clouds.
“Where’s he?” Lucas asked, appalled to even spell out the maniac’s name.
The policemen exchanged glances.
One of them avoided Lucas’s eyes while the other one forced a wider smile which looked more like a grimace.
“About that, Mr. Harrison… The criminal…, Todd Lewis – He-”
“I want a clear answer,” Lucas stated, giving them both a hard look.
Yet, the angrier he became, the more the policemen hesitated.
“What is going on here?” The Chief of Police appeared. Seeing Lucas, his expression became regretful.
“Oh, Mr. Harrison, you’re here.” He sighed. “Unfortunately, Todd Lewis escaped again. This isn’t his first time in this place, however, he has never spent more than an hour here.”
“What do you mean he escaped?” Lucas growled.
“We are sorry, but even I couldn’t do anything to stop him. By escaping, I mean he was bailed out again.”
“Todd Lewis has deep connections with the politicians and the bigwigs across the city, who always clear up his crimes,” said one of the policemen.
“So far, he is never punished for his crimes,” Added the second policeman.
Lucas clenched his jaws, veins popping out.
He glared at the police officers. “I don’t care about whatever connection he has. Get him back.”
“Todd Lewis isn’t a simple man.” The Police Chief was literally sweating. ” They promised to take this place down if we didn’t release him.”
“Mr. Harrison, please forgive us this time. We will do our best to catch him.”
Bunch of cowards.
Lucas left the Police Department, enraged. Sitting inside his car, he dialed a number.
“Investigate his whereabouts, take him to the basement.”
At The AG Group,
Because the company was closer to the hospital, Heidi decided to spend the rest of the night there,
To gather her thoughts,
And to digest the huge unbearable news.
Dropping a palm on her stomach, Heidi wondered if a life was really growing in there.
A child that belonged to her and Lucas.
No way.
What had she done?
She stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, her eyes staring into nothingness.
This was bad timing.
How could she fall pregnant at this moment?
Why?
Why?
What was she going to do?
Not knowing how many hours had passed by, Heidi finally moved from that position, sensing someone entering the office.
Isla almost dropped her tablet. “M-Ms. Olsen!” She yelped. “W-What, you’re here. We spent the whole night searching for you, how did you…”
Isla trailed off and scurried forward, checking Heidi out from head to toe.
“What happened to you, Ms. Olsen? Why do you look so pale and sick? Where did you sustain these injuries?”
The injuries in her heart were way more severe than those on her body.
Shaken by the news of her pregnancy, Heidi remained in a trance, not reacting to Isla’s words.
“Ms. Olsen…” Isla waved a hand in front of her. “Is something wrong?”
Then Isla panicked, mumbling some incoherent words about informing Kate and Zach.
