125. Every Woman’s Desire
Lucas’s eyes were fixed directly on hers, his intense gaze making Heidi’s heart beat at a random pace.
Thinking and hoping the man would ignore her, he walked in her direction, and Heidi had the urge to turn around and flee.
“What are you doing here, Heidi?” Was the first question he asked when he approached her.
“What else would bring Heidi here, Honey?” Tracy said in an innocent jovial tone, holding Lucas’s arm protectively as if marking her territory. “There are so many big wigs at this party, this is a perfect opportunity for a girl like Heidi to make some cash. Oh, I think Steve Anderson brought her. Didn’t we see him a while ago?”
Lucas’s expression was indescribable, his eyes flashing with disbelief and something else. “Heidi, did you come to this place with Steve Anderson?”
His tone sounded more like a scolding.
Heidi wanted to reply when Steve approached.
Steve looked from Heidi to Lucas, a doubtful look in his eyes. “Is he bothering you, Heidi?”
Lucas glared at him. “What gave you the guts to interrupt us?”
“Why not?” Steve gave him a harmless smile, snaking his arm around Heidi. “I am Heidi’s suitor, so I’m bound to protect her.”
“Take your filthy hands off her. Leave Heidi alone.”
“Not in a million years, Mr. Harrison,” Steve replied.
There were murmurs and whispers behind them because the men’s argument had already garnered attention.
Heidi put on a helpless look. She never intended to draw any attention and was here for a special mission.
However, Lucas Harrison was going to spoil all her plans.
Then a loud voice boomed from the stage, interrupting the men’s argument. Heidi sighed in relief.
“Attention, Everyone!” The MC took the microphone. “It is with great pleasure to have all the outstanding business experts in Phoenix City gather in the same place. It shows our strong relations and the unbreakable support we have for each other.”
“For this special occasion,” The MC continued. “It would be useless if we only came here to mingle around and make connections. How about we use this opportunity to do a good course for the charity organizations? An auction will soon start, and the highest bidder will be crowned the most generous mind in Phoenix City.”
When the guests heard the word ‘ Auction’ there was an obvious excitement on their faces.
Everyone started taking their seats as the auctioneer stepped onto the stage, pulling a wide glass silhouetted by a thin cloth.
Heidi took a seat on the first row with Steve sitting beside her. Surprisingly, Lucas and Tracy sat in the row just behind them.
Lucas’s deep gaze on her back made her nerves tingle, and Heidi struggled to compose herself.
The auctioneer started by introducing a thousand-year-old painting.
Some people bid for it and someone won.
Then he introduced a silver sword which could be used as decoration.
Heidi was starting to lose interest when the auctioneer brought out a set of jewelry.
“And this jewelry is nothing less than a great treasure.” His voice boomed inside the hall. “Although this jewelry is only a few decades old, it was made from unique gold and silver. You would never find its type in the market today.”
Heidi’s eyes narrowed, her brows furrowing, and her rapt gaze fixed on the jewelry.
“Are you, perhaps, interested in this jewelry?” Isla was sitting beside her. She must have noticed Heidi’s change in demeanor ever since the jewelry was brought to the stage.
Heidi snapped back to her senses.
There was only one kind of this jewelry in the world. She’d seen it many times in the past and even played with it when she was little.
What was her Grandma’s jewelry doing at an auction?
The jewelry that went missing many years ago suddenly appeared in this kind of place. Wasn’t that a huge miracle?
“Yes, I’m interested in it,” Heidi answered Isla’s question.
“But it’s so beautiful. I guess many people are gonna want it,” Isla murmured.
“This jewelry shouldn’t be out here. I have to get it back to Grandpa.” Heidi’s tone was resolute.
However, she was still speaking when a silky voice sounded from behind her.
“Lucas, Honey, you promised to do something grand for me to make it up to me for saving your life. How about you buy me this set of jewelry?”
Lucas’s indifferent tone sounded. “It is just an old necklace. What do you want to do with it?”
“Oh, but it’s old, unique, and valuable, every woman’s desire. You won’t turn down my request right, Honey? Remember your promise to me.”
“1000!” The first bidder raised his number tag.
“2000!” Said the second bidder.
Heidi waited for the best opportunity to raise her number tag after the third person announced, “4000!”
But someone beat her to it. “10,000!”
Gasps spread across the hall as all eyes turned to Lucas Harrison.
